Round 17 Match Report - Reserves

Hinterland 5.4.-34 def by Redcliffe 12.13-85

There is no tougher ask in div 3 reserves football than playing Redcliffe but our boys showed plenty of fight against the undefeated premiership fancies. After playing the ‘who’s in, who’s out’ game the previous Thursday and Friday, the team that ran out on Saturday consisted of our grizzly 2’s veterans, a couple of new faces and a clone of Robbie Russell.

The first quarter probably set up the game for Redcliffe as they skipped out to a 31 point lead. They are a strong and disciplined unit who have played a lot of football together and it showed, though our boys stayed in touch in the second keeping them to 1 goal and kicking 1 themselves. The 3rd was by far our best with a Musico brace, including a soccer off the ground, complimented by a ripping running goal from Jack Horton. Jack has been in great form to finish the season and continued to find the footy at will during the game. He has a couple of areas to work on but has really improved over the course of the season to regularly feature in our best.

After winning the 3rd we couldn’t go on with it as Redcliffe kicked the last 3 goals of the game to post a solid victory. Against the Tigers with an undermanned team it was another massive effort. Gilla was huge in the ruck all day giving some brilliant service to our mids. Brock made the most of it winning some really clean clearances and pushing the ball forward. Mick kept doing what he has done through the middle all year whilst Pete managed to get through the game after not training for a couple of weeks and nursing a suspect hamstring. Dennis had a couple of really good touches and defended hard in a tough game for a backman.

We didn’t take the points but unearthed a couple of new players and saw the continued development of others in our last match. All of the guys who played in the magoo’s this year should be very proud of their effort and I would hope they would be more determined to come back next year and have a go a cracking that top four position.

Although I haven’t been able to watch too many full games I hope you have enjoyed the reports, I’ve enjoyed writing them. I’m sure I’ll be reviewing a few more wins next year and can’t wait to review that first game of finals. All the confidence in the world that will be the case.

Lastly, a massive thank-you to Razor who took on the reserves coaching role at very short notice at the start of the season. He hasn’t been able to commit the time I know he would like to have but has put in a massive effort to get the 2’s boys through a long season. Ace also deserves special mention as he also stepped up to help coach the reserves alongside and often in place of Razor when Ray was on the field. I know all the boys you coached appreciated the hell out of it so thanks again.
